45 Colt Revolver - When looking at the features of a cartridge, you need to understand what the cartridge is designed to do. The .45 Colt was introduced in 1873 in the Army Single Action Colt. It replaced the less efficient .44 cartridge. The .45 Colt, among other things, was designed to be effective against Indian warhorses at 100 yards.

During several battles, horses outnumbered men, sometimes two to one. Study it a bit, and you'll find that the .45 Colt design envelope is useful today. Some people might buy a snub .38 or slim-line 9mm and be happy, but the Colt .45 is still available.

I'm outdoors and want something on my hip to hold the beast. If you've ever encountered a big cat or bear in the woods, the moment you recognized the heart is one you won't easily forget. Wolves are really dangerous. If you want a cartridge that will take 40 inches of an animal without the fuss, fuss, sound, and recoil of a magnum, the .45 Colt is the best choice.

Caliber Double Action U.s. Military Revolvers

A Ruger Blackhawk carries loads that push the .45 into .44 Magnum territory or beyond. Smith & Wesson and Ruger dual revolvers work well and are very accurate. Single-barreled guns, starting with Colt as well as Traditions and Taylors and Company, are top-notch recreational guns. Colt .45 with different load levels is used in all these revolvers.

While the cartridge is very old, I find it cool in a way that no modern cartridge is, except maybe the .45 ACP. The .45 Colt was used by Elmer Keith, Frank Hammer, Tom Terry Persons, Wyatt Earp and a number of others. With a light load, it is a joy to shoot and use, with a heavier load, it can take any game that can be taken with a handgun.

By modern standards, the 1.285-inch cartridge is large. The .512 case rim is on the small side for the cartridge size. It is not always suitable for double-action star-throwing revolvers, it is designed for use with single-action revolvers and ejection buttons.

Mainstream black powder loads, according to my research, use 230-260 grain bullets at 750-900 fps, depending on the manufacturer and exact specifications. Some used copper rubber housings and even in the middle of priming. I mean the .45 Colt cartridge. However, the .45 long collet is still valid even without the .45 short collet.

The Army has also adopted Smith & Wesson Schofield ammunition as a secondary standard. Barrel twist is limited by design and can be eliminated with a shorter barrel, and the Schofield .45 is shorter than the .45. Velocity is around 780 fps with a 230 grain bullet. So, to be precise, the two barrels used are the .45 Schofield and the .45 Long Colt. History tells us that the .45 Schofield cartridge was regularly issued because it could be loaded in either gun.

Most of the loads I use are manual loads. The 200-grain SWC at 750 fps is quite accurate and produces a clean hole and hits the target with ease. Moving to solid 255 grain bullets with about the same velocity and better long range accuracy.

Some cowboy action loads use slower speeds, even 500 fps! That's fine, but for my usage, 700-800 fps seems like a low point for accuracy. I like to try old cartridges at 100 yards or so. Maintain enough front sight and you'll hit, or at least come close.

A shooter who likes carbo action is a good shot with a regular bullet. The single-armed pistol is very satisfying to shoot and makes good bullets. A CCI Shotshell is available for dispatching dangerous reptiles and pests, and the standard 255-grain load is a proven defensive load. Many modern coated hollow point loads offer similar performance to the .45 ACP hollow point.

The advantage of the .45 Colt bullet is that the hollow point bullet does not need to be shaped to feed through the semi-automatic action. The nose does not need to be strong. Speer Gold Dot, Hornady FTX, Winchester Silvertip and Federal SWC/HP are good defensive options.

Among the very useful loads are the heavier loads that are safe in all revolvers, but are quite a bit above the cowboy standard. Buffalo Bore offers these as factory loads. I don't use heavy 1300 fps game because my .45s are lightweight. Keep a handgun and a field gun. They just won't handle Ruger loads. The 255 grain hard lead SWC is very strong at 1000 fps. Powerful, accurate, and capable of playing medium games with ease, these are a great choice.

I load mine manually, although the primer situation now limits my load. I like the old .45 and the revolver that office it. Colt .45 is a crackerjack load.

UNCLASSIFIED DOJ Announces New Rules To Repair Belts, Accessories Used To Convert Pistols To Pistols Jan 13, 2023 In those days of war, horses were an important part of the equation. In many battles on the plains, horses outnumbered men. The bullet was next to the sword for the cavalry. These men often fight as dismounted soldiers.

What Makes This .45 Colt Single Action So Rare?

As fascinating as the history of firearms is, I wanted to see how it worked first hand. That's what this report is about. The Colt SAA was designed around 1872 and delivered the following year. Colt designed a new revolver and chambered it for the most powerful handgun cartridge of its day.

Colonel Bennett wanted his men to have the best ammunition from the army. One of the highlights was the ability to drop an Indian war horse at 100 yards. The standard .45 Colt loading uses a 250-grain bullet with over 40 grains of black grain. (There are other combinations.) This load produces 900 fps from a standard 7 ½-inch Colt barrel.

In addition to thousands of civilian and foreign sales, over 37,000 of these revolvers were purchased by the US Army in 1890. I am curious how these revolvers meet the 100 yard accuracy requirements. .

Original SAA, while very expensive, may wear well. A modern clone seems to be the best test mule. A Pietta revolver in .45 Colt with a 7 ½ inch barrel with blued grip frame, cylinder, ejector rod and barrel, and case hardened hammer and frame are well finished. This revolver uses a modern transfer rod system that allows it to hold 6 rounds of ammunition. The Pietta locks up tight and feels like it's made of good materials.

Cartridge Confrontation: .45 Acp Versus .45 Colt

I shot out to 25 yards with good results. Groups five shots at 2 ½ inches at 25 yards with a good load. While the bullet was not lead and had good accuracy, the original soft cone bullet was suitable for self defense. This experiment shows that they tend to roll in the media. For this test, I put manual loads. Initial testing showed some of the following results at 25 yards.

Hand carry is more accurate than factory ammo, but that stat doesn't mean much. There are factory loads for defensive purposes with 185- to 225-grain bullets that are very fast. However, the projectile travels faster than distance. The problem may be pressure, visual image and human element.

The difference between modern and original rotation is the visual rule. Most revolvers aim for long shots at 25 yards to give soldiers a good chance to connect at long range. Today we like revolvers that hit the target at 15-25 yards. Traditional revolvers are well controlled in this regard.

Calculations show that the bullet is 250 grains at 900 fps and 2.5 inches high.
