The main missions of the AC-130H Specter and AC-130U Spooky are close air support, interdiction and armed reconnaissance. Close air support missions include troops in contact, convoy escort, and point air defense. Air indictment missions are conducted against pre-planned targets or areas of opportunity and include a combination of attack and reconnaissance and a series of armed surveillance missions.

Canada has completed a deal to buy 88 US F-35 fighter jets, a fixed-wing aircraft. It carries a wide range of ground attack weapons integrated with sophisticated navigation, fire control and weapon systems. Unlike other modern military fixed-wing aircraft, the AC-130 relies on visual targeting. Because its large profile and low operating altitude of about 7,000 feet (2,100 m) make it an easy target, its close air support missions are usually flown at night.
The airframe was built by Lockheed Martin, while Boeing was responsible for fighter conversion and air support.
Developed during the Vietnam War as "Project Gunship II", the AC-130 replaced the Douglas AC-47 Spooky, or "Gunship I". The sole operator is the United States Air Force, which uses the AC-130U Spooky and the AC-130W Stinger II.
Close air support roles include supporting ground forces, escorting convoys and urban operations. Air interdiction missions are conducted against planned targets and targets of opportunity. The new AC-130J is based on the MC-130J Commando II special operations tanker. The AC-130W Stinger II is a modified C-130H with upgrades including a precision strike package.
During the Vietnam War, the C-130 Hercules was selected to replace the Douglas AC-47 Spooky gunships (Project Gunship I) to increase mission endurance and increase ammunition carrying capacity. Able to fly faster than a helicopter and at high altitudes with excellent hover time, the use of pylon turns allows the AC-47 to deliver continuous and accurate fire to a single point on the ground.

In 1967, JC-130A 54-1626 was selected for conversion to the prototype fighter AC-130A (Project Gunship II). The changes were made at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base by the Aviation Systems Division. A direct-sight night-vision telescope was mounted in the front door, the forward-facing primary infrared device was positioned forward of the port well, the minigun and swivel gun were mounted lower and aft on the port side. The prototype analog fire control computer was hand-built by RAF Wing Commander Tom Pinkerton at the USAF Avionics Laboratory at Wright-Patterson AFB. The AC-130 was later supplemented with the AC-119 Shadow (Project Gunship III), which later proved to be underpowered.
The surprise package upgrade includes the latest 20mm rotary automatic gun and 40mm Bofors gun, but no 7.62mm melee support armor. The surprise package configuration serves as a test bed for avionics and Armament systems for the AC-130E. In 1970, 10 more AC-130As were procured under the "Pave Pronto" project.
In the summer of 1971, the Surprise Package AC-130 was converted to the Pave Pronto configuration and given the new nickname "Thor". C-130E converted to AC-130E for "PAVE Spectre" project.
