45 Colt Anaconda - Reintroduced Colt Anaconda in .44 Rem. MSc is a worthy addition to the "Snake Pistol" line. Yamil South

Colt revolvers hold a very special place in my heart. I grew up with my dad's 1969 Colt Cobra, which he owned until he died and which I inherited. It was a tangible symbol of craftsmanship and reliability. When Colt started making revolvers again in 2017 I was hooked and have since photographed every single model they have made. Earlier this year, Colt reintroduced one of my favorites - the Anaconda.

I owned some very good .44 Magnum revolvers in the early 1990's, so I ordered a 6" Anaconda in .45 Colt. It has quickly become one of my favorite large frame revolvers. It was powerful, reliable and of course accurate. It was a sure thing when Colt released the new Anaconda that I would get one.

The new Anaconda is very similar to its predecessor, but includes some significant improvements. The Anaconda 2021 is made using new materials and processes thanks to advances in manufacturing techniques and metallurgy since Colt discontinued the revolver nearly three decades ago.

The new model is currently only available in the powerful .44 Magnum, which allows the use of less powerful .44 Special ammunition. It is available in two barrel lengths, 6" and 8", both with a polished stainless steel finish. I chose the 6 inch version, which I find to be lighter and more natural than the 8 inch version.

Some of the new features introduced on Colt's new generation of snake revolvers include user-replaceable front sights, a thicker top strap that is drilled and tapped to mount the scope rail, and new adjustable rear sights. The Anaconda also comes with Hogue rubber grips to reduce recoil. Although Colt added these features to the new Anaconda, it still retains its original shape, making holsters readily available, and since the grip contour is the same, aftermarket options are available from multiple suppliers.

My first impressions of the new Anaconda were very positive. Fit and finish were excellent. The way the crane locks into the frame, for example, is incredibly precise and tight. And when it locks, it looks like that part of the turret is made out of one piece of steel, rather than two. The cut is just perfect.

The single action trigger is about 5 pounds and is very sharp. The double-action trigger was smooth even without grain. The Hogue grip fitted my hand very well and allowed me to easily control and manipulate the trigger, hammer and cylinder breech.

The Hogue grips that come standard on the new Colt Anaconda do a good job of dampening the recoil feel even with a full .44 Magnum load. Yamil South

My first ride with the new Anaconda was just a function test. I wanted to see how the new revolver performed in single and double action. Due to the current ammo situation, I took some of my personal load out onto the range - a few mild rounds pushing plated 240-grain projectiles at 900fps. This load is easy to handle and fun to shoot. I put the new Snake through its paces, firing over 100 rounds into the MGM steel silhouette at 10-15 yards, both single and double action.

Shooting from hand at those distances was a blast - no pun intended. With these lighter loads, the Anaconda was just perfect, stacking rounds right on top of each other. While these "soft" rounds were comfortable to shoot, they had enough energy to knock down a target. I had to place a large rock at the base of the aiming stand to keep it upright.

The only thing I don't like about Anaconda is the jagged texture on the launch pad. It's unnecessarily sharp and a smooth trigger would feel and run better.

Now for the accuracy test. I know this revolver can achieve great accuracy at longer ranges, but due to time and range limitations, I was shooting at about 20 yards indoors. I used the Ransom International Multi-Cal Steady Rest, a fully adjustable machined aluminum mount that provides a super stable shooting platform. The ammo I chose for this test was Federal Premium 240-grain Hydra-Shok JHP ammo. This munition has a published muzzle velocity of 1210 FPS with 780 foot-pounds of energy. That's for sure

Due to the ammo supply, I could only fire four five-shot groups. The group average was 1.85 inches. That's a pretty decent result for me, and I bet I can get even better with practice. One thing I can say for sure is that the Hogue grips are a great addition to this big snake when shooting full house .44 Magnum cartridges. I have fired similar loads from other revolvers with all types of grips and have found these Hogue grips to be comfortable to hold and very effective in reducing perceived recoil.

If you don't like the default configuration of this revolver, you can customize it in a number of ways. One thing I did was order a set of small Pachmayr presentation grips, which is such a blast of late 80's/early 90's nostalgia. They were the grip style I had on my original Anaconda, and while the Hogues are probably better at most things, I like the Pachmayrs for sentimental reasons.

Another custom touch I'd like to add is the scope base. While I won't be using the revolver for hunting, I'd love to see what the Anaconda can do with the scope mounted.

After all the recordings I've made with the new Colt Anaconda, all I can say is that I really like it. It took me back to the early 1990's when anaconda roamed freely in shooting ranges across America. I found this new model to be a great upgrade on the 90's classic with its modern features. Whether you're a sport shooter, hunter, recreational shooter, or just looking for a self-defense weapon, the new Colt Anaconda is definitely a great choice for those jobs and more.

The Colt Anaconda is a large-frame, double-action revolver that has a through-barrel firing under the main barrel and a hex barrel designed and manufactured by Colt's Manufacturing Company. in 1990. Built on the new and heavier MM frame, the Anaconda was designed to compete with .44 Magnum contemporaries such as the Smith & Wesson Model 29, Sturm, Ruger & Co. Redhawk and Blackhawk and the Dan Wesson Firearms Model 44. With many of these models being marketed and sold a full 35 years after their introduction, the Anaconda was a very late attempt to break into the large caliber handgun market.

Unlike most other pistols introduced in the 1980s and 1990s, the Anaconda was never offered with a blue carbon steel finish and was only available in stainless steel.

Initially, Anacondas were plagued with poor accuracy, but barrel changes quickly corrected the problems to the point that Colt declared their new pistol one of the most accurate .44 Magnum revolvers in production.

Anaconda revolvers were primarily marketed to sport shooters and hunters as they were too large for police use or concealed carry, although custom versions of the weapon continued to be available from the Colt Custom Gun Shop. until about 2003.

For 2021, Colt has revived the Anaconda with a new design featuring a thicker frame and oversized python action.

Originally chambered for the .44 Magnum, the Anaconda was also offered in .45 Colt in 1993. In its cut and finish, it resembled an enlarged king cobra mated to a barrel with shaggy ribs reminiscent of pythons.

Originally sold with a satin brushed stainless steel finish, a highly polished mirror variant called "Ultimate Stainless" was cataloged in the Colt Custom Shop for a time. The Anacondas were fitted with four-, six-, or eight-inch barrels, synthetic rubber fighting-style neoprene grips with grooved fingers with nickel-colored "Rampant Colt" medallions, large aiming hammers and triggers, and iron sights with red inlay in front. and a fully customizable white border on the back.
