45 Concealed Carry - When a new shooter or apprentice begins to consider concealed carry, I give the best advice I can. One tip is that you really need two guns - a big gun and a small gun - if you live in a true four-season climate. Even in hot Florida, you should probably have a smaller gun to tuck under your shirt or pants and a fairly large bag.
Another tip is that the holster is a great weapon size change if designed correctly. Larger guns can be concealed in a proper holster with the correct geometry. The holster should be secured and angled for a sharp presentation of concealed carry.

It is very important to carry a spare magazine with you. It's a map of Steel Will and a trusty stiletto combat light.

I also have a good knife and a spare pistol. Sometimes I carry a battle light. I don't want anything to get out of hand and weigh the beginner belt, but it takes some getting used to. We all carry cell phones with us, so we have a lifeline. A well-made knife can double as a striking tool. I like to carry a knife with a glass breaker, a relic of Leo's time and for rescue purposes.
I will no longer use the knife to search. Most folders are bad combat knives, but I like to carry something important to use for storage. I have two knife scars - not self-inflicted - and I respect the edges but also its limitations. The Steel Will folder is the piece I carry with me most often.
When it comes to big and small guns, I've relied on the Colt Government Model .45 and snub nose .38 for years. They each play their role perfectly, but what's in between is useful these days. I think the .22s, .25s and .32s are the most useful as threats. Their effect, or lack thereof, on motivated criminals is well documented, and I don't feel any better about the .380 ACP. The same goes for derringers.
Simple readiness requires a rifle ready for immediate action. If carrying a gun with a cartridge in the room is inconvenient, then you need a revolver. While reliability is key, weight, handling and speed can be more important than absolute accuracy. The balance between power and portability is important.

The smallest and least powerful handgun I occasionally carry - and usually as a backup - is the Ruger LCP II .380 ACP. Although this weapon is light, it has good sights, a good launcher and solid reliability. It's amazingly accurate. I load it up with a Federal 99-grain HST and hope for the best. It's too good to have on hand.
The big step is the snub nose of the .38 Special. The 442 with Ahrends grips is easier to camouflage and the 638 Pachmayr grips are easier to shoot well. The Blackhawk pocket holster is a great help with this. A revolver can be held in the opponent's body and fired repeatedly. It continues to fire if the self-loader fails.
The author believes that weapons with a modern polymer frame are good. The Rex Delta, below, is a new introduction with excellent performance.
I can't remember the last time I shot a program like this, which isn't the best program, but gunfire has haunted me for the rest of my life. These rifles are loaded with Federal 129 grain Hydra-Shok +P. This is my most used backup gun. 638 gets an appointment for primary transport.

Sam Colt coded three sizes of guns - pocket, belt and holster - and made the gun in the correct frame size. I still think that's a good description. The small upgrade in weight and size makes for a much more efficient weapon that is easier to use and hits harder than a pocket pistol.
The Glock 43 is a choice. For increased wound potential, the Springfield XD-Sin .40 S&W is a powerful and reliable weapon. It packs a punch - without trying to sugarcoat it - but it's manageable for those who train. I load it with Hornady Critical Defense and enjoy good function and accuracy. I'd rather have this gun than half the guns going through secret carry permits.
A pretty remarkable, lightweight rifle that I carry around a lot is the Bond Arms Bullpup 9. It is a unique design that offers eight rounds of 9mm ammunition in a compact package due to its unusual rear magazine and bullpup design.
The next step is the service size of the gun. This leads to an increase in shock potential, reliability and service life. The Glock 19 9mm is the baseline in this category. If you pay less, make savings. If you pay more, make sure you get your money's worth.
The Glock 36 .45 Acp: Small Gun, Big Impact
The slightly smaller Rex Delta 9mm is one choice, the slightly larger SIG P229 another. A Glock 45 9mm or Glock 19X offers more power and an excellent shot chance. Load them with a Federal HST or Hornady XTP and you have an effective rifle that offers manageable recoil and durability.
This is probably as big a gun as most shooters want to carry. These pistols are a pleasure to use and shoot, very accurate and controllable with a good ammunition reserve.
I always carry a pocket knife and sometimes a tactical pen when carrying this weapon. Guns are not the only resort, they are the last resort and there should be other options. When it comes to slings, I use both leather and Kydex. The Werkz case offers great balance and is well designed.
The big guns are revolvers and autoloaders that you carry with you more than half the time. Speed, strength and accuracy of action are important.

My threat profile includes big cats and wild dogs, not to mention the increasingly common psychopaths found in the wild (a recent incident that killed a veteran and hiker and injured two on the Appalachian Trail), so I have rather it works out. Armed with the weapon I trained with. Full-sized weapons take practice.
With a 1911 Dan Wesson Heritage or a Les Baer in an N3 Galco in a waistband holster, I'm as well armed as I can be with a pistol. I find flat and fast action 1911s more comfortable and better balanced than the SIG P229/Glock 19X class, and that's a product of long experience. I occasionally carry a SIG 1911 Nightmare Carry Fastback concealed. It's not a compromise for the most part, as the work is strong and precise - but it also works harder than the government model.
I also mount revolvers, for the same reasons mentioned in the section on .38 revolvers. Animal attacks often result in being surprised and the animal grabs the victim by the neck or head. The survivors thrust a revolver into the animal's body and fired several times.
The .357 Magnum revolver is not too heavy to carry constantly, but offers plenty of power. For personal defense, the revolver is far from obsolete. I often carry a heavy barreled Model 13 Smith and Wesson or a Wiley Clapp GP100 in .357 Magnum. I have a range of Lobo Gunleather products that make carrying a revolver viable and comfortable.

While the 9mm has made huge rounds in recent years, the larger and heavier bullet is a better starting point for some. And 45 ACP ballistic technology hasn't exactly stood still for the past 50 years.
